The best Appliances

Measure the opening in three dimensions, then measure the door swing. Width is the number everyone checks and depth is the one that ruins the install. A standard-depth refrigerator protrudes several inches past the counter, and a counter-depth model gives that back at the cost of usable volume. Then check the door: a fridge door needs clearance to open past ninety degrees before the crisper drawers will slide out at all, which is why a fridge that fits the alcove can still be unusable against a side wall.

Check what the appliance needs before you check what it costs. An induction range wants a 240V circuit, which is an electrician visit if you are coming from gas. An over-the-range microwave only vents properly if there is a duct run to the outside; without one it recirculates and pushes heat back into the room. A dishwasher needs the supply and drain where the old one had them. Any of these can add several hundred dollars to a purchase that looked like a straight swap.

Delivery, haul-away and installation are where the price actually settles. Retailers advertise the appliance and charge for the rest, and they charge differently. Free delivery with paid haul-away, free haul-away with paid install, and bundled everything all exist at the same sticker price. Add the whole basket before deciding which retailer is cheapest, because the ordering changes more often than you would expect.

Warranties are two warranties. Most appliances carry one year of parts and labor and a much longer term on one specific component: the compressor on a refrigerator, the motor and basket on a washer. That longer number is marketing unless you read what it excludes, because it usually covers the part and not the labor to fit it. Worth knowing that ice makers and control boards are the two components that fail most often across every brand, and neither is normally under the long warranty.

Decibels are not linear. Dishwasher noise is quoted in dBA, and the scale is logarithmic, so 42 dBA against 46 dBA is a much bigger gap than the four points suggest. Under about 45 dBA you stop hearing it in an adjacent room. Above about 50 you will hear it over a conversation. If the dishwasher sits in an open-plan kitchen, this is the specification worth paying for; if it is behind a door, it is the one to trade away first.

Buy from a retailer with a service network. Large appliances are the one category where the cheapest seller is not automatically the right one. When a fridge fails in the first year, the difference between a retailer who schedules a technician and one who refers you to the manufacturer is a week of a warm kitchen. Prices in this category also move hard on holiday weekends, so if the purchase is not urgent, waiting for one is usually worth more than shopping around today.
