Measure the route, not the room. The room is almost never the problem. A sofa fails on the stairwell turn, the apartment door, or the ninety degrees between the hallway and the living room. Take the diagonal of the sofa and compare it to the narrowest point on the way in. This is the single most common expensive mistake in furniture, and it is entirely avoidable with a tape measure and five minutes.

The warranty is the honest spec. Manufacturers know their own failure rates, so the warranty term tells you more than any description of the frame. Twelve years on an office chair means the company expects it to last longer than that. One year means it expects the opposite. Read what is actually covered too, because the gas cylinder on a chair and the foam in a cushion are the two parts most often excluded from an otherwise long warranty.

Learn to read frame language. On seating, kiln-dried hardwood with corner-blocked joints is built to be repaired. Stapled softwood or engineered board is built to be replaced. On casegoods, solid wood survives being moved in a way that veneer over particleboard does not, and an assembled back panel is what keeps a bookcase from racking under a full load of books. None of this is visible in photographs, so it has to come from the specification.

Price the delivery before you compare the prices. Curbside means the box is left on the pavement and the rest is your problem. Room of choice means it reaches the room. Assembly is usually a separate line again. Two sofas a hundred dollars apart can land two hundred dollars apart once delivery terms are included, and return shipping on a sofa you dislike will comfortably exceed the discount that persuaded you.

Office chairs are sized, not one-size. Several of the best chairs come in multiple frame sizes that are not interchangeable, and ordering the wrong one produces a chair that is uncomfortable in a way no amount of adjustment fixes. Check the size chart against your height before ordering, and if the chair only comes in one size, check the seat depth against your leg length rather than assuming it will do.
